Viola Davis Cast in Steve McQueen's Heist Thriller Widows

English director, producer, and screenwriter Steve McQueen has been making waves for over twenty years now as a filmmaker of immeasurable talent, and most recently won acclaim with the release of his 2013 biographical drama 12 Years a Slave – which went on to win Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture at the Oscars. Likewise, Viola Davis (Suicide Squad) is a critically acclaimed and Oscar nominated lead actress, whose most recent work on the ABC television series How to Get Away With Murder was recognized with a Primetime Emmy.

Given the impressive pedigrees respective to both McQueen and Davis, it should perhaps come as no surprise that the two talents might attract the attention of one another. On that note, the latest word has it that McQueen and Davis will in fact be joining forces on the forthcoming heist thriller, Widows.

According to THR, McQueen is all set to direct the feature film adaption of the 1980s British TV series of the same name, with Davis set to star in one of the lead roles. Widows covers the exploits of a group of four widows looking to pull off an attempted robbery that killed their late husbands. McQueen and Davis are aiming to deliver a compelling drama here; one that is set in a contemporary American city and places its four female leads – two black, one white, and one latina – front and center. On top of all that, the script is from acclaimed Gone Girl author/screenwriter Gillian Flynn.

McQueen’s interest in the new project has been in the offing for a while now – as the original Widows TV show served as a formative piece of filmmaking that he saw in his youth – and should result in a Widows movie that will see the Oscar-winning filmmaker producing another true work of passion. Davis should accordingly be able to bring all of her immense talent to bear in the making of the new movie, and with any luck the role might win her further acclaim and notice from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

12 Years a Slave served to cement McQueen’s status as a contemporary filmmaker to watch out for with bated breath, and Davis has shown no signs of stopping in her reign to the top of the very best actors currently working in Hollywood. If everything goes according to plan, Widows will provide for the perfect marriage of McQueen and Davis’ respective talents in one major motion picture event.
