‘Doctor Who’ Star Joins ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies'; Filming Starts Next Week

AMC’s The Walking Dead and Syfy’s latest series Z Nation are just two recent examples on TV of the zombie craze currently sweeping the nation. Meanwhile on the big screen, the success of World War Z last year has prompted a sequel, and 2015 will see at least two new zombie films in theaters, including Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Maggie and horror-comedy Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

After five years of development, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is finally moving full speed ahead. The film adaptation for the 2009 bestselling parody novel, based on Jane Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice, will be directed by Burr Steers (Igby Goes Down, Charlie St Cloud) from a screenplay by David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle) and Steers. Filming is scheduled to start next week.

Lily James (Downton Abbey) and Sam Riley (Maleficent) were recently cast in the leads as Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy, with Bella Heathcote (Dark Shadows), Douglas Booth (Romeo & Juliet) and Emma Greenwell (Shameless) in supporting roles. Now one more name has been added to the list.

THR is reporting Doctor Who star Matt Smith has joined the ensemble cast. He’ll play Mr. William Collins, who, in the original novel, proposes to Elizabeth Bennet; then, after being rejected, weds her friend Charlotte Lucas instead. Of course, in this version, once zombies enter the picture, it’s not a happy ending for anyone.

It’s unclear whether Mr. Collins in this film will be smarmy and arrogant, like in the original P&P novel, or if he’ll be more of an awkward mess, as he’s been portrayed in other adaptations. While it’s safe to say Smith has had practice playing both personas while starring as the Time Lord for three years, his recent work in Lost River seems to be a rather big departure from Doctor Who. He could be looking to further separate himself from his most known role.

Smith also recently completed production on Terminator: Genisys. There’s been no word yet on exactly who he’s playing in the franchise reboot, but he’s expected to return for the second and third films in the new trilogy, should they get made. So between Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Terminator: Genisys, 2015 could be an important year for the British star’s debut in the U.S.
